Notarization: how to guarantee the authenticity of documents
Notarization on the blockchain is the set of processes required to ensure that a given file or digital document, at a specific date and time, has proof of existence and immutability.
Thanks to the transcription in one or more blockchains of its unique fingerprint (hash), the original document is protected from any kind of alteration. In fact, if this were to be altered, e.g. by adding new information or even a simple space, it would generate a new unique fingerprint that would no longer be compatible with the previous one, which was the subject of the notarization.
Once the document has been notarised – that is, its hash has been recorded – on the blockchain, the record can no longer be modified or deleted. This means that notarization provides proof of the existence and integrity of data, which can be used for legal or other purposes. Moreover, due to the decentralised nature of the blockchain, it is resistant to censorship and external intrusion. In summary, notarization is a secure and reliable method of recording and verifying the validity of documents and other data.
Lastly, through blockchain transactions’ signature and the integration of specific authentication processes, it is possible to ensure that a specific wallet or person has signed a notarized document.
Our approach
Blockchain Italia offers the notarization service, an innovative and secure way to authenticate, store and sign documents, guaranteeing their integrity over time. To provide a complete and customised service, Blockchain Italia follows a series of steps.
The first phase consists of analysing the customer’s needs and the particularities of the use case, in order to fully understand their needs and identify the most appropriate solution. Based on the project, we identify the most suitable Blockchain technology to guarantee the highest level of performance.
Next, we proceed with the development of the solution, choosing whether to create a custom product at the customer’s request or to use our own software, for example the Dedit.io platform, usable via WebApp, White label, API or PoC. This analysis is conducted in close collaboration with the customer to ensure that the product is in line with his needs.
Once the product is ready to be deployed, we accompany the customer towards full operation by providing the necessary training to use the service correctly.
Dedit.io, a cross-blockchain notarization platform, enables notarized documents to be given proof of authorship, i.e. the indisputable identification of the person who uploaded the document, and a timestamp, which provides the certain date of the transaction. Additional functionalities include the safe and secure storage of documents through an encrypted cloud; the multi-signature function for the validation of documents between multiple parties. In addition, Dedit.io is the only platform of its kind that provides log-in with SPID, enabling subscriptions made to the Advanced Electronic Signature (FEA).
Our team of experts provides appropriate training, ensuring that all processes are clear and transparent. Finally, we also offer infrastructure maintenance and management services after the release of the solution, to ensure that the service is always delivered efficiently.

FAQ
What are the advantages of notarization on blockchain?
The advantages of notarization are security, reliability, traceability and cost reduction. Blockchain technology offers high security due to its decentralised structure; notarised documents are therefore protected from manipulation. The notarization process eliminates the need for third-party intermediaries, making it more reliable and efficient while also reducing the overall costs of the process. The blockchain also allows the tracking of all transactions and changes made to notarized documents, giving greater transparency and traceability.
How does notarization work?
The notarization process involves the creation of a hash stored in blockchain that represents the document. The hash is a string of characters generated by a mathematical algorithm that uniquely represents the content of the document. Once created, the hash is stored on the blockchain along with the date and time of notarization. This ensures that the original document is protected from any kind of alteration, as any changes made to the document after notarization would result in a different hash.
What is the legal value of blockchain notarization?
Blockchain notarization is becoming increasingly popular as a means of ensuring the validity and authenticity of digital documents. However, the legal value of such notarizations may vary depending on the country in which they are used.
In Italy, blockchain notarization does not yet have an explicit legal value.
Decree Law 135/2018, converted into law on 7 February 2019, in Article 8-ter paragraph 3 states that storing a piece of data on blockchain is a valid way to prove its existence at a given moment in time:
Article 8-ter paragraph 3) – The storage of a computer document through the use of technologies based on distributed ledgers produces the legal effects of electronic time validation referred to in Article 41 of Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 July 2014.
The same Decree defines “distributed ledger-based technologies” as those IT technologies and protocols that use a shared, distributed, replicable, simultaneously accessible, architecturally decentralised ledger on a cryptographic basis, such as to enable the recording, validation, updating and storage of both unencrypted and further cryptographically protected data verifiable by each participant, not alterable and not modifiable.
In some foreign countries, such as the United States, blockchain notarization has already been recognised as valid for legal purposes. For instance, a law has been passed in Arizona that allows the use of blockchain for notarization of legal documents.
In summary, the legal value of blockchain notarization depends on the country in which it is used. However, blockchain technology offers a high level of security and immutability of data, which makes it potentially suitable for notarization of legal documents. It is important to bear in mind that, at the moment, the legal validity of a document notarised via blockchain still depends on the decision of the courts.
