The first cohort of the European Blockchain Sandbox, initiated in 2023 and concluded in May 2024, has served as a significant platform for regulatory dialogue and technological innovation in blockchain across Europe. Led by the law firm Bird & Bird in collaboration with OXYGY and Warren Brandeis, this initiative engaged approximately 50 regulatory authorities at the European level, creating fertile ground for the adoption of blockchain technology.
Contribution of Blockchain Italia
Blockchain Italia actively participated in this inaugural cohort with Dedit.io and TokNox. Dedit.io is an advanced platform for notarization, secure document signing, and sharing. TokNox, on the other hand, is Blockchain Italia’s new project dedicated to tokenization. Selected among the top 20 use cases in the Sandbox, Dedit.io has proven to be a versatile solution compliant with regulatory requirements, significantly contributing to regulatory dialogue and the definition of best practices.
During the cohort, Blockchain Italia engaged in meetings with regulators from across Europe to address existing regulatory challenges in the sector and propose solutions that promote a more favorable environment for blockchain adoption. Collaboration with the European Commission and Bird & Bird was pivotal, providing essential guidance and strategic support throughout the process. Participation offered valuable insights and helped shape regulatory practices for the future.
Cohort Results
The final cohort report, divided into two parts, provided a detailed overview of acquired experiences and emerging best practices. Part A synthesized lessons learned from regulatory dialogues, while Part B detailed identified best regulatory practices. The report was presented during a webinar on June 20, 2024, where identified best regulatory practices were discussed and audience questions were addressed.
During the public webinar, awards were announced for the most innovative regulators. Among the winners were BFDI (Germany), Banco de España (Spain), CNMV (Spain), NKOM (Norway), and Banca d’Italia (Italy).
Future Outlook
The conclusion of the first cohort marks just the beginning of a journey that will see further developments with future cohorts 2 and 3. The goal is to continue promoting collaboration between public and private entities, developing and refining regulatory practices further to support sustainable growth of blockchain technology in Europe.
